BAD Virus! BAD!! « Thread Started on Sept 21, 2003, 5:41pm »
I got this warning from a Shaw employee who's a friend of my daughter. He's warning everyone about this one.
***
>Hey folks another email from your favorite Shaw employee J > >There is another VERY nasty email virus that is hitting our customers and I thought that I would give you all a quick heads up.
>The email will appear to come from Microsoft. This time though the email itself is VERY professional looking Microsoft technical page with actual working links to the Microsoft website. This can be viewed right at the bottom of the following link. > >http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_SWEN.A > >This email will be asking you to install a security patch to protect your system from other viruses and security flaws in Windows. Whatever you do, do not install the file!!! Microsoft will NEVER email you anything, not a security patch, not a product update, not even a thank-you note for making Bill Gates the richest man alive.
>If you open the file it will pop up a window asking you to press yes or no to installing the file. It does not matter what you click it will infect your system either way. > >Another way that this one is extremely nasty is that even if you preview the message it will still try and infect your system. If you are running an email program like Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express you will want to disable the auto preview feature. > >In Outlook Express you will want to click on: > >“View” -- “Layout” – and uncheck the option for “Show Preview Pane” > >In Outlook, depending on the version you have click: > >“View” – “Preview Pane” and that should get rid of the preview pane. > >I know its annoying to have to change settings like this but with this virus if you have the preview pane feature enabled all you have to do is click on the message and you will get the virus. > >I know what some of you are thinking, “I have Norton Anti-Virus I am safe” WRONG!!! The first thing this virus will do is disable ANY anti-virus program or firewall that you are running. > >One more thing to make this virus even worse is that it can also spread using file-sharing networks like Kazaa and IRC. If you do have to download music off of the Internet in the next couple of weeks BE VERY CAREFUL what you download. There is no way of scanning a file to see if it is infected as of yet. > >This email is a virus and a fairly nasty. Within 24 hours of its release on the 18th we had received over 500 instances of customers who had been infected with this one so it’s just a matter of time till you great folks receive this email as well. > >If you want any further information about this virus you can go to the following links:
